1 in 8 patients forced to wait more than 4 hours in NHS Grampian A&E over Christmas

North East MSP Mike Rumbles has highlighted the human cost of NHS Grampian underfunding after ISD figures released today show that dozens of patients were left waiting at Accident & Emergency units over the Christmas period.

Figures for the final week of 2018 show that NHS Grampian missed the Scottish Government’s target of 95% of patients to be seen within 4 hours. More than 12% of patients missed the deadline in NHS Grampian, including 23 people who were required to wait over 8 hours to receive treatment and 5 who waited 12 hours or more.

Earlier this winter, Mr Rumbles uncovered figures that showed that the Scottish Government had missed its own funding target for NHS Grampian for each of the past nine years, to the tune of £165 million.

Mr Rumbles said: “It is utterly unacceptable that so many people looking for emergency treatment over Christmas had to wait more than four hours to be seen. Nobody should have to wait that long for emergency services and the fact that some people were forced to wait over eight and twelve hours in the waiting room is appalling.

“NHS Grampian has been at the back of the queue for funding ever since the SNP came to power in 2007. After ten years in government health services in the North East have seen a rapid decline in both the resources available and outcomes for patients.

“The current situation simply cannot continue and the Cabinet Secretary must now look again at providing the funding that is needed to deliver an effective local health service.”

  • The ISD Scotland statistics are available at http://www.isdscotland.org/Health-Topics/Emergency-Care/Publications/data-tables2017.asp?id=2083#2083
  • Across Scotland, just 78% of patients were seen within 4 hours in the week ending 31 December 2017. For the first time over 1,000 patients waited over 8 hours while 272 waited over 12 hours. (NHS Grampian – 23 over 8hrs, 5 over 12hrs.)
  • The following SPICe table shows NHS Grampian's allocation since 2009/10 alongside the target allocation and the difference between the two, which shows NHS Grampian has received a total underfund of 165.6 million since 2009:
