All parties must back better care for children experiencing mental health issues - Waddell

Ahead of World Mental Health Day, Aberdeenshire Liberal Democrat candidate John Waddell has urged MSPs from across the political divide to come together and back calls to provide inpatient care for youngsters in need of mental health treatment in the North East.

Patients in NHS Grampian have experienced some of the longest waits in the country for CAMH Services. Before the Covid outbreak, only 56% of youngsters referred to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services under NHS Grampian received treatment within the 18 week deadline in 2019 .
Calling for action, Mr Waddell said: "The wellbeing and life chances of children experiencing long-term mental health issues can be severely impacted if the proper treatment is not provided early.
"Aberdeen and the North East have been without proper inpatient care for CAMHS sufferers for far too long and action is more urgent now more than ever due to the Covid pandemic.
"This does not have to be a political issue. I'm calling on all MSPs from across the North East to get on board and lead the way to get better mental health care for our young people."

  • Text of letter from John Waddell to all MSPs for the North East (09/10/20):

Dear ----,

I am writing to you regarding inpatient Child & Adolescent Mental Health care in the North East.

Saturday 10th October is World Mental Health Day. You will know that there are no inpatient beds for CAMHS in Aberdeen and that the wellbeing and life chances of children experiencing long-term mental health issues can be severely impacted if the proper treatment is not provided.

At present, the unit in Dundee provides the most northerly available inpatient care, leaving many people in the North without access to such vital service. For young people suffering severe mental ill health it is distressing enough for them and their families without needing to travel long distances to receive the essential care that they need.

Like many people in the North East I have been campaigning on this issue for years.

I am writing to you today to invite you to back my calls for in-patient child and adolescent mental health care in Aberdeen. This will expand the existing support and make life easier for families and young people in the North East.

I look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely,

John Waddell
