Commenting on the publication of the Transport (Scotland) Bill, Scottish Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson Mike Rumbles MSP said: “The Transport Minister professes his commitment to boosting bus usage but it’s under his leadership we’ve seen bus travel fall below 400 million journeys for the first time ever.
“The problem with these plans is that they will leave councils under more financial strain as companies are able to wash their hands of unprofitable routes.
“The biggest thing the Scottish Government could have done to arrest this decline is to promote and enhance the Concessionary travel card for the over 60s. What a missed opportunity.
“Buses benefit the environment, are better for the health of our nation and help vulnerable people get out and about. It’s time the government paid them the serious attention they deserve.”
