Commenting on the Scottish Government’s confirmation of rural funding for 2017/18, North East MSP Mike Rumbles said: “The Minister’s statement is nothing less than SNP spin. The Scottish Government can confirm long-term support for our rural economy anytime they want.
“Scotland will continue to receive its share of Barnett funding, including any extra money available from leaving the EU, and rural funding is already fully devolved to Edinburgh. There are currently no plans for that to change, as the Minister knows.
“There will undoubtedly be challenges and uncertainty for our rural economy if the UK leaves the EU, and many communities and rural industries could see income through trade go down. That is precisely why it is vital that both the UK Government and the Scottish Government stop point-scoring and make a full commitment that overall levels of rural support will continue after 2020.”
