Health Minister burying her head in the sand over NHS Grampian underfunding

The Scottish Government’s Minister for Health received a scathing rebuke today, from North East MSP Mike Rumbles, for failing to acknowledge a decade of underfunding for NHS Grampian.

In a session of Ministers questions in the Scottish Parliament, Mr Rumbles called on the Scottish Government to put right the £165.6 million underfunding, which has seen the local Health Board receive even less that it’s entitlement under the NRAC formulas (NHSScotland Resource Allocation Committee).

Regrettably, the Minister refused to acknowledge the total loss of funding for NHS Grampian, despite the fact that under the current funding formula the local health service receives even less than the 90% of the Scottish average per head of population that it is entitled to.

Mr Rumbles said: “I again raised the issue of underfunding for NHS Grampian with the Scottish Government today and once again the Minister refused to answer the question I asked her. Simply put, NHS Grampian is the worst funded health service in Scotland and the SNP have no intention of improving that situation.

“Instead of acknowledging the deep concerns from thousands of patients and staff in NHS Grampian the Minister had the gall to blame the previous administration which has not been in power for over a decade.

“It is quite clear that this incompetent and disingenuous Scottish Government have one rule for some communities in Scotland and quite another for places like Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. It is time they got their priorities right and delivered a fair share of funding for our struggling public services in the North East.”
