Aberdeenshire East Liberal Democrat Christine Jardine has called on SNP Government Ministers to introduce a compensation scheme for North-East businesses affected by the closure of the Forth Road Bridge to goods vehicles.
Ms Jardine was speaking following confirmation that repair work on the bridge will continue well beyond the deadline originally set out by the Scottish Government. Transport Scotland recently confirmed that restrictions are likely to remain in place until mid-March.
She said: "This news will come as a bitter blow to businesses which have already experienced huge disruption as a result of heavy goods vehicles, bringing deliveries North, being forced to find alternative routes.
"No one doubts that the engineers are doing their utmost to get things back on track but we need to see a response from SNP Ministers and support for businesses that have been affected by the closure, and that has to extend across Scotland.
"The Scottish Government were happy to claim credit when repair work was ahead of schedule. They must accept responsibility for this extended delay too."
Ms Jardine, who is the Scottish Liberal Democrat candidate in the forthcoming Scottish Elections, also asked that any businesses who have faced problems because of the closure, or who would like to raise another issue, get in touch with the office in Inverurie on 01467 629668.
