Aberdeenshire East Liberal Democrat Christine Jardine has called for improved, and faster, financial support for the councils in the wake of the serious flooding.
Ms Jardine said the current Bellwin scheme takes too long to get money to hard pushed councils with local authorities in Scotland having to wait as long as a year for funding following previous flooding in 2012 and 2015.
And she called on the Scottish Government to go further than the arrangements already announced so that councils have resources to ensure fast, effective recovery of services.
She said: “While we all welcome the announcement that the financial schemes have been triggered the Scottish Government has given everyone the impression that support for communities is automatic, which is far from the case.
“Communities throughout the North-East are facing massive repairs and looking to an already hard-pressed council for support but we saw following previous flooding in Perthshire that the scheme was not enough and took too long to distribute the support that the communities needed.
“We need the Scottish Government to look at how this scheme operates and come up with a better approach for the future.”
