Dundee Councillor Craig Duncan and Angus Councillor Ben Lawrie have launched a campaign to save a vital bus service in Monifieth and Broughty Ferry. North East MSP Mike Rumbles is backing the campaign and has written to Scottish Transport Minister Humza Yousaf calling for action to assist local councils to save vital bus links for communities across the region.
Mr Rumbles has said that Stagecoach should think again about its decision to axe the Service 75, as he said that on a significant part of its route, if the service is removed, residents will be left with no decent bus service.
Mr Rumbles said: “I strongly back Councillors Lawrie and Duncan in trying to save this local bus service, the 75, in Broughty Ferry and Monifieth. It proves a vital lifeline for many local people and will leave some in the community without a decent service if Stagecoach axes it. Stagecoach really must think again and reverse this decision.
“I have written to the Transport Minister about Stagecoach’s recent announcement about bus service cuts in the North East, as these are highly detrimental. I want him to give councils better support in trying to oppose such detrimental changes by commercial bus operators.
“The Scottish Government has said that buses are better for the environment, better for health of our nation and that they help vulnerable people get out and about, but this year we have seen bus travel fall below 400 million journeys for the first time.
“The Scottish Government should be supporting councils and local authorities to stop commercial operators just taking an axe to vital local bus services.”
Cllr Duncan added: “The 75 is a vital bus service for many folk and it is ridiculous for Stagecoach to claim it is no longer needed.
“I will be doing everything in my power to keep the service up and running and I encourage everyone who uses the route to contact Stagecoach and their local council to express their views.”
Cllr Lawrie also said: “Stagecoach really must reverse the decision on Service 75.
“I am grateful for the support of Mike Rumbles MSP in trying to save the 75 bus service and want to see greater support given by Scottish Government in helping local people to protect their bus services.”
