Parliament should have the final say on travel restrictions

MSPs should be able to vote on new draconian laws introduced by the Scottish Government which restrict peoples personal freedoms, North East Liberal Democrat MSP Mike Rumbles has said.

Throughout the Covid crisis the Scottish Government has had the power to implement new restrictions without the approval of the Scottish Parliament and from this Friday, it will be illegal to travel between some local authorities for non-essential reasons.

Mr Rumbles said: “The travel restrictions which are due to come into force this week are completely unenforceable by Police Scotland and are draconian, in the very sense of the word.

“I have very serious concerns that the Scottish Government has been able to severely limit personal liberty without answering to anyone and without the usual checks and balances.

“What matters is that elected MSPs should be able to do their job, hold the government to account and vote on new laws that affect people’s lives.”
