Commenting on the Scottish Government’s new ‘Rail investment strategy for next decade’, North East MSP and Scottish Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson Mike Rumbles said:
“The SNP have made a lot of big promises for rail over their eleven years in office. But in reality communities, particularly in the North and North East, have seen very few of those improvements delivered.
“Instead of a fully costed timetable in place with the necessary investment of capital and political will to deliver it, the plans published today provide no details about how and when upgrades will be delivered on the Aberdeen to Inverness, Aberdeen to Edinburgh and Highland Mainline routes.
"In government Liberal Democrats steamed ahead in promoting rail travel, putting projects such as the Borders Railway and Laurencekirk station into motion. We need to see that kind of ambition again, from introducing smart contactless payment on all routes to establishing new rail links such as Levenmouth. This will boost existing services and ensure that more people have access to the railways in future."
