Scottish Liberal Democrat agriculture spokesman Mike Rumbles MSP today repeated his call for a full parliamentary statement on the latest Common Agricultural Payment (CAP) shambles.
Mr Rumbles was speaking as details of errors in an emergency loans scheme introduced after repeated delays in this years’ CAP payments were snuck out in response to an inspired parliamentary question.
Mr Rumbles is now set to raise this issue with party business managers at a meeting of the Parliamentary Bureau tomorrow.
Commenting, Mr Rumbles said:
"Slipping out details of this latest CAP failure quietly will not reassure any farmers that the emergency financial support they have been promised will arrive in full and on time. This saga has been going on for months now and farmers need to be reassured that the Scottish Government are finally getting to grips with things.
"The Cabinet Secretary needs to come to Parliament and explain to MSPs - and more importantly to farmers and crofters - the steps that are being taken to get the loan scheme back on track. I will be pushing hard for a full statement from Fergus Ewing at the meeting of the Parliamentary Bureau tomorrow.
