Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP for the North East, Mike Rumbles, has praised Aberdeen International Airport for its ambitious expansion project.
The £20 million investment will see a 50% increase in the size of the airport terminal and a complete revamp of the airport’s passenger facing areas.
Speaking after a visit to Aberdeen Airport, Mr Rumbles said:
“It is fantastic, in a time of economic turmoil for the North East, that Aberdeen International Airport is investing in a vital part of our infrastructure. With the downturn in the oil and gas industry and the Scottish economy stagnating, it is vital that the airport continues to attract the business of big carriers, with connections to international hubs like Heathrow.
“I welcome the diversification of carriers that this will also encourage, ensuring that the airport is not solely reliant on business travel.”
Carol Benzie, Managing Director of Aberdeen International Airport, said: “It was great to welcome Mike Rumbles MSP to the airport to discuss our ongoing terminal transformation. In spite of the North Sea oil downturn, we have pushed ahead with the project and began working on phase one earlier this year.
We look forward to welcoming Mike back to the airport on the completion of phase one in June 2017 to show him our exciting two-storey extension featuring new arrivals and immigration facilities, and new business lounges.”
