Scotland’s rural economy too important to be used as a political football

The UK Government has added to the uncertainty felt by Scottish farmers over Brexit today, after the Scottish Government’s rural economy secretary made a statement to the Scottish Parliament making it clear that he has received no confirmation from the UK Government that funding to replace EU financial support will continue at the same level after the 2019/20 round of payments.

Scottish Liberal Democrat rural economy spokesperson and North East MSP, Mike Rumbles has repeatedly called on MSPs across the chamber to work together to deliver a new system of rural support that will enhance the strengths Scotland’s rural economy. It was previously understood that the level of funding on leaving the EU would stay the same until at least 2024.

Mr Rumbles said: “The Cabinet Secretary’s statement today will be deeply worrying for thousands of businesses in our rural economy. The UK Government must clarify their position as a matter of urgency and confirm their commitment to continue the same level of funding until 2024.”
