Commenting on the Scottish Government’s U-turn on live animals being exported from Scotland for slaughter, North East MSP and Scottish Liberal Democrat spokesperson on rural affairs Mike Rumbles said:
“I have raised this issue with the Cabinet Secretary on a number of occasions and each time he said that no action was needed as animals are not exported from Scotland for the purposes of slaughter. That is clearly not the case.
“I am pleased that the new minister for rural affairs is finally taking this appalling practice seriously and has promised to take immediate action to improve the situation. But serious questions need to be asked about why it has taken the Scottish Government so long to act. It is very disappointing that it took a news report and some bad publicity to get them moving.
“I have also called on the minster to look at new ways to keep calves in Scotland, such as raising them for veal and she has promised to look into the matter. ”
