Six years for flood defences unacceptable, says North East MSP

Mike Rumbles, Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP for the North East, has criticised authorities for failing to take action to protect Kembhill Park, Kemnay, from future flooding.

In letters to Aberdeenshire Council last month, both Kemnay Community Council Chair, Hazel Smith and Mr Rumbles requested that an immediate risk assessment be carried out so that the local community may be protected from flood waters from the River Don.

Flooding in January left a number of Kemnay homes very badly damaged. Without action the local community will remain at risk of further damage.

Mr Rumbles commented: “Continued inaction puts people’s homes and property at risk and this is wholly unacceptable. I hope that, for the sake of the residents of Kembhill Park, a permanent solution to the flooding issue may be found without a wait of more than six years.

“I welcome Aberdeenshire Councils consideration of temporary preventative measures, this represents a step in the right direction.

“I am however gravely concerned that Kemnay is not to be included as a Potentially Vulnerable Area before SEPA conducts its next review in 2022. This is despite the admission that the area is highly probable to be assessed as one in future”
