SNP continue to defend North East council cash grab - Rumbles

Mike Rumbles, Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP for the North East, attacked comments made by the education secretary, John Swinney, which demonstrate a complete disregard for concerns around the SNPs controversial council tax plans.

Proposals by the SNP to raise council tax on band E-H properties would see a third of North East homes hit by higher council tax bills.

Mr Rumbles said: "Mr Swinney is economic with the truth when he states that all council tax revenue will be retained by Local Authorities. He declines to mention that the SNP will skim this excess revenue from our cash strapped North East local authorities by cutting their block grants by £47million more than is raised.

"The Scottish Government was defeated when it brought this issue to a debate in parliament last week, the parliament has spoken quite clearly on this. The SNP face a united opposition on this indefensible cash grab and I would encourage the Scottish Government to think again or face another defeat when it actually brings its proposed council tax charges forward for approval.
