Travel ban will be unenforceable and undermine policing by consent

North East Liberal Democrat MSP Mike Rumbles has called on the First Minister to stop short of making it illegal to travel between local authority areas, potentially eroding public support for the very measures the Scottish Government want people to follow.

In a session of First Minister’s questions this afternoon, Mr Rumbles raised concerns about overwhelming the police with an unenforceable travel ban and undermining policing by consent.

Mr Rumbles said: “I’m not convinced the First Minister fully understands that threatening people with a legal ban on travel will only undermine public support for the measures that are supposed to protect us all.

“It’s shocking that we are eight months into this crisis and we still do not have an adequate test & trace system that would prevent the need for drastic restrictions such as region-wide lockdowns and criminalising travel.”
